Begin with one predictable switch
A lamp in the far corner of the living room is a good candidate for a first automation. You already know when you want it on, and the light makes it easy to see whether the schedule worked. Starting with that small job is simpler than trying to automate every outlet in one weekend.
Check that the lamp returns to the desired state after power is restored. A mechanical on-off switch often makes this easier to assess than a device with a touch panel. Test the behavior yourself before buying a pack of plugs. An outlet can switch power; it cannot necessarily press the electronic control on a connected appliance.
Choose the ecosystem before the multipack
Tapo P125M is one compact US smart plug with Matter support, according to its official specifications. Matter can help compatible devices work within a chosen ecosystem, but setup and available controls still depend on your controller and home configuration. Confirm those requirements for the exact revision sold.
The P125M page lists 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for setup. That is a reminder to check network requirements rather than assuming every smart plug works with every router configuration. A clear setup guide and an accessible physical button may matter more than a long list of assistant logos.
A North American outlet still needs a compatibility check
Buy the correct regional version and read its electrical rating. Do not infer that a plug suits every appliance because its advertised wattage looks generous. Follow both the plug and appliance instructions, including load type and restrictions on automatic switching. For a first project, a compatible table lamp is a more straightforward use case than unattended heating equipment.
Look at the outlet itself. A wide housing may block the neighboring socket, while a crowded power strip can create awkward placement. Photograph the location and measure the available space before ordering. A neatly placed device is easier to operate manually and less likely to become another daily annoyance.
Keep the ordinary controls useful
Make sure other household members can turn the lamp on without your phone. Label the device clearly in the app, choose a simple schedule, and explain what happens if someone uses the physical switch. A guest should not have to learn an automation system to sit comfortably in the living room.
After setup, observe the routine for several evenings. Does the light come on before you need it? Does the schedule conflict with weekends? Adjust one thing at a time. Simple, predictable behavior is a better result than a collection of clever rules that everyone works around.
Buy a second plug only after the first proves useful
A multipack can reduce the per-unit price, but unused connected devices still need management. Keep account credentials secure, apply updates, and check the maker’s support information. If the first plug adds friction instead of convenience, a conventional timer or better-positioned switch may be sufficient.
The considered choice
A useful first smart plug makes one lamp easier to live with. Confirm ecosystem, network, electrical compatibility, and manual control before buying more.

Does Matter mean I need no other setup?
No. Check the requirements of the device and the Matter controller you plan to use.
Will a smart plug dim a lamp?
An ordinary on-off smart plug does not provide dimming. Choose compatible dimming hardware if that is your goal.
