A doorway can decide the purchase
In an older home, a slightly raised kitchen threshold may divide the robot’s useful route. In a newer apartment, a thin rug edge can be the more troublesome obstacle. Walk through the home and mark every transition rather than assuming all rooms form one continuous surface.
Measure height, depth, slope, and the space available for an approach. Photograph unusual profiles so support can assess them. The largest number in a product claim does not describe every possible shape or surface.
Understand what a threshold claim includes
Roborock and Dreame both publish obstacle-handling features for selected robots. Read the associated diagrams and test conditions for the exact model. A two-layer threshold, a rounded strip, and a vertical ledge should not be treated as interchangeable.
Threshold capability also does not mean a robot cleans stairs. Plan a separate method for stair treads and follow all drop-protection instructions. Avoid adding improvised ramps without considering the manufacturer’s guidance and normal household walking safety.
Rug height is only one variable
A rug can have a low central pile but loose fringe or curled corners. Thin constructions may move as a brush passes. Read the rug maker’s vacuum settings and any powered-brush restrictions before selecting a robot. A universal floor description is too broad to settle those questions.
Check the rug and pad together. The complete assembly creates the edge the robot crosses. Furniture legs may hold some sections in place while leaving another corner loose, so inspect the area as it is actually furnished.
Mop lifting is conditional protection
On a vacuum-mop robot, carpet detection and pad lifting can be useful. The published lift height and supported settings still need to match the textile. eufy’s X10 documentation is one example describing automatic lift behavior; that feature should not be generalized to every rug.
Use permitted no-mop or no-go settings for surfaces that should remain untouched. A rug you care about is a good reason to choose a conservative routine. Manual cleaning in one area can coexist with automation elsewhere.
Observe the first route and keep records
Start with a prepared floor and watch the transitions that concern you. Note which approach directions work and whether the machine repeatedly hesitates. Use only supported adjustments and keep the retailer’s return conditions in mind while assessing normal operation.
If the route remains unreliable, the answer may be a different model or a separate cleaning zone rather than a more aggressive setting. Buy the capability that is documented for your measured situation, and avoid turning a marketing maximum into a guarantee.
The considered choice
Measure the full transition and rug system. Match the manufacturer’s conditions, then preserve exclusions where the floor or textile requires them.

Does a climbing claim apply to any step of that height?
No. Shape, depth, approach, and test conditions matter. Check the exact manufacturer explanation.
Can I solve every rug issue with more suction?
No. Fringe, edge movement, pile, and care restrictions may require a different approach or exclusion.
